The Briar Cliff University cheer squad has been working a lot on cardio and new stunts to prepare for the upcoming season.
Head Cheer and Dance Coach Alisha Knowler says that keeping the same squad for both football and basketball helps a lot.
“Last year we did two different squads and I let girls come and try out for basketball season if they were not on football and it was just too much because we had to go back and relearn cheers that half the team already knew.”
Knowler says she has seen real improvement this year and there is still more to learn.
“We are even still working on a lot of things that we cannot get right now so even from right now to the end of the season there will be a lot more improvement. I like where they are at right now, and I feel good about where they are at right now, but I know that we can be better.”
Captain Abby Buckhouse says that this year has been very successful so far.
“We have definitely upped our game, we have had our choreographer come and do stunt clinics with us so we have done stuff that we have never done before. We are doing a lot of cool looking things and we are definitely ready to show everyone what we got.”
Knowler brought in a choreographer for the girls to learn new and different stunts this year.
“I have a dance background and I do not have a cheer background, even though I know all there is to know about cheer. When it comes to stunting portion of it, I a not that knowledgeable so I bring in our choreographer, I hired a choreographer and he is really good and he knows what he is talking about when it comes to stunts.”
The girls will be competing in February at the NAIA cheer competition. The date is not yet set for that.
