The Briar Cliff theater department hopes to knock famous playwright William Shakespeare off his high pedestal with its new play, “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged),” debuting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 at the BCU Theater.

The comedy is directed by adjunct faculty member, Jenna Soleo-Shanks, who says the five cast members will improvise most of Shakespeare’s 37 plays into 90 minutes while also modernizing the material with pop culture references. The cast consists of students Aaron and Elyse Cruz, Jean Van Driel, Bronson Wilson and admissions representative Jason Wesselmann.

Audience participation in the play is an element Soleo-Shanks said will be a one of the show’s highlights because it gives the actors and audience members a chance to “make fools of themselves.”

Show times are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. A Saturday matinee begins at 2 p.m. Come to the show relaxed and ready to laugh.
